- From the Ferdinand News, Thurs., Apr 27, 1978 (Note: this date appears to be incorrect) "Funeral services for George A. Kunkler, 86, of Dale, were held at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dale. He had died at 8 a.m. Saturday, Apr. 29, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Huntingburg. For the past year and one-half he had been a patient at the Golden Circle Nursing Center in Dale. Burial was in the church cemetery where members of Santa Claus American Legion Post 242 conducted military rites. Pall-bearers were from the Dale American Legion Post 444. Surviving are the wife, Laura (nee Volz), to whom he was married on Nov. 26, 1946; a daughter, Mrs. James (Irene) Seitz, of Westchester, O.; three step-daughters, Mrs. Eldon (Betty) Jenkins, of Dale, Mrs. Melvin (Catherine) Schaefer of St. Meinrad and Mrs. James (Mildred) Meyer of Huntingburg; a brother, Peter, of Tell City; a sister, Mrs. Isabella Schlachter of Tell City; 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He wa born at Ferdinand on FEb. 27, 1892, the son of George and Isabella Hartlaaf Kunkler. Most of his life was spent at St. Meinrad where he was a mail carrier until retiring. He also drove the school bus for years. Fifteen years ago George and his wife, Laura, moved to Dale. He was a WWI veteran, a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Santa Claus American Legion, Knights of Columbus and the DAV at Jasper."
