    Notes
    • I don’t know whether they had children. They were married at Riga on 26 August 1935. She was born in 1903. Berndt was 9 years younger than she was, which suggests a previous marriage by the bride. On her immigration to the United States on 7 May 1952 as von Klot she described herself as divorced, presumably from Berndt. She lived in California, and her aged mother Angele Marie [von] Kaesberg or Kaesborg lived with her. They were both naturalized as US citizens in 1959, and the accompanying file has many affidavits given by people who had known them in Latvia. From their surnames I guess they were of Latvian, not German, origin.
Since Angele Mebborn litta was 49 w.hen she immigrated alone, one might assume that if she had children, she left them behind. The records at Riga, if they survive, might provide an answer. She had an older brother, who gave his name when he came to the States in 1927 as Nikolai Alexandrovitch Wilhelm von Kaesborg. He was born at Riga 13 January 1900. On the passenger manifest of his ship, which sailed from Danzig, he described himself as an actor and as speaking Russian, German, French, Latvian and English. These facts suggest he was from a rather important family, which adopted a Russian identity, since he listed Russian first in the list of languages he spoke. He married a sister of my aunt, and in the 1930 census of Omaha, Nebraska he listed his nationality as Russian, and as that of his parents. The patronymic Alexandrovitch might be worth researching, and suggests acculturation by this member of a German family. His mother was born Angele Marie Volksdorff in 1872 to Heinrich and Maria Elizabeth Mueller on 5 May.

Nikolai had two sons, one of whom, Judge Lek von Kaesborg, I met in 1963. Both sons were given the middle name Klopp, a surname which I find mostly in the Rheinland Pfalz but uncommonly in Pomerania, Prussia
