"Wiley Vickers: Pioneer of Coffee County, Georgia: Compiled by Jesse H. and Delma (Wilson) Paulk: 1991"

Extracted from the Douglas Enterprise dated 8 May 1991, Reflections and Recollections of K. D. Vi ckers (grandson of Rebecca): There are many stories told about Rebecca Paulk Vickers, but there is one that seems to stand out from the others. There used to be a buggy trail along what is now the Baker Highway and they had a large foot-log across Reedy Creek to the church on the other side. According to what I was told, there came a big flood, a downpour, and it washed the foot-log out of place. Grandma Rebecca went down there with some of her farm workers and they took an oxen with them to try and pull the foot-log back into place. They worked down there a half-day and couldn't get the foot-log back into place. After a while, Grandma Rebecca just backed off and said to the men, "Let's load up and go home. The Lord moved the log and if He wants it put back, He'll have to put it back. We can't do it." Not so long after that there came a flood on the Satilla River and the river backed up and floated the log back into place across the creek.

K.D. stated that Grandma Rebecca had many black farm workers, but she didn't regard then as "slaves". Even her church was integrated and some of her black workers were preachers and preached there. On the third Saturday and Sunday of the month, they would all load up in the ox carts and go to the church in the morning and stay all day long. You wouldn't see them going back home in thier ox carts until the sun was going down just above the treetops. After the Civil War and the slaves were freed, a black man named Peter (Vickers) had been so faithful to Grandma Rebecca that she gave him a farm up here in this community. We called him Uncle Peter and his wife, Aunt Betsy, because they were like family to us. When Uncle Peter died, some said he owned about 7,000 acres of land. His land joined onto the Harper's land and he's buried right on the other side of Osie Harper.

After Uncle Peter died, Aunt Betsy used to come to visit us in her wagon with her old gray mule pulling it. She would spend the day with us and when she got ready to go home, we boys would hitch the mule to the wagon for her. Uncle Dan said the farmers around her used to drive their herd of sheep together and spend the night in whichever area they had driven the sheep that day. Aunt Betsy had a room in her home where she would let the white farmers stay overnight, when they drove the sheep to the area she lived in. He said the men would kill a sheep and butcher it, and Aunt Betsy would kill a dozen chickens and she'd cook the sheep and chickens for then that night. He said, she'd also cook them some chicken and dumplins in a big iron wash pot and they'd have a feast.
