    Notes
    • :"Nikolaus Leinenbach was a farmer and a tailor. He left his native land with his wife and two small daughters and in 1847 landed in the United States. They made their way to Pittsburgh, Pa. and probably came by boat down the Ohio River to Ohio and at last Indiana. Nikolaus Leinenbach bought land in Ferdinand Township, Dubois Co.IN on June 17, 1854.According to Mary Leinenbach: "Old Nick was a tailor, you know, a schneider. . .He was a clothesmaker, a suitmaker is what it amounted to. He would go around to different homes and farms to get business. . . He went to Bretzville a lot to make clothes. He would walk there, they always wanted him to stay to help butcher. He was such a good ball and rifle man, they would have him shoot the hogs. One day the men were going to trick old Nick. They had two rifles, one with a bullet and one with no bullet. They handed him the gun without a bullet. He was so good he could tell by the balance the gun had no bullet. He lifted up the first gun, seen it wasn't balanced. 'Let me try the other gun.' He shot and the hog fell. Old Nick being a favorite of the women, a woman heard the men make out how they would fool Nick and tipped him off. . . he wasn't that good. Old Nick lived out where young Nick lived later. He walked to all the farms. . . The southern part of Old Nick's farm land was bought by the state forest."(Information of Mary B. Leinenbach) According to the parish record Nicholas Leinenbach died of diphtheria. This researcher has not found an obituary for him. Nicolas Leinenbach and his family are listed in Germans to America as passengers on the Argo, which came from Havre to New York, arriving 29 Jun 1846.
